I love calendars! Staying organized and knowing exactly where I need to be and when. This totally must be an adult thing! When I was younger I could totally remember appointments and meetings without writing them down. As I have gotten older, and life has gotten busy and busier, I have to write EVERYTHING down. Including work schedules, appointments and family obligations. There are many different useful calendars to keep you on task. Our family used to use the Cozi online calendar, until we switched to a family Google calendar. I like the fact that everyone has access to the same calendar and any of us can add dates and we all can see the changes.
Using the Microsoft Outlook calendar this week for class came naturally to me. All online calendars are pretty much created equal with a few special features here and there. Knowing how to use a professional calendar in a large library setting would be very useful. The library I work at only has 4 aides and one director. We have one staff email and the director has their own private email. We have no need to use the Outlook calendar. We see each other in passing where we meet casually and pass information along to each other that way.
If there was a need in our library to use the Outlook calendar, I think the features of knowing the availability of other staff members and being able to schedule a library wide meeting would be helpful. Trying to gather a large staff for a meeting can seem impossible, but if everyone had access to the library online calendar, it would be easy to meet! Some of the older staff or those not so comfortable with technology, may struggle or forget to check the calendar. Also, if the internet in the library is down there is no way of checking the calendar unless you use your phone and data.
All and all, I think any sort of device to keep your life simpler and more organized is the way to go. The less things we can store in our brains will clear up space to enjoy the simple things in life, like dogs and chocolate!
