Designing or planning a website can be a daunting task! Staying focused and knowing what you would like the end result to be like can be a good way to complete the task without feeling overwhelmed. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when starting the planning process.
Be aware of the visual hierarchy. In other words, get straight to the most important point your viewer will see when they find your website page. Rank the most important elements you want to include on your website in order of importance and visually display them in this ranking order. By visually arranging and organizing your website elements, your visitors will naturally gravitate toward these important elements first.
Another good tip to keep in mind is following the conventional website layout. This will give your viewers the confidence to navigate your website. Wild and wacky website designs can be confusing and distracting for prospective viewers. Having an easy to use navigation bar is key to keeping viewers on your page.
Here are some navigation bar design guidelines to follow:
Add your logo and link it to your homepage.
Put the most important things first, so far-left in the navigation, or at the top for vertical menus.
Keep wording short and straightforward.
Add color and/or contrast to make the navigation stand out.
Make the font large enough so the menu items are easily clickable.
