We have been talking a lot about websites in our Social Media & Web Technology class. With the Holiday fast approaching I have been thinking a lot about what to give and make people on my list for gifts. I also think a lot about celebrating the Solstice and not so much the religiously commercial part of Christmas.

I always start cruising the crafty websites of www.pinterest.com or www.etsy.com to get ideas of things I can make for my closest family members or friends. This time of year there are TONS of ideas. Finding the time and motivation between work and school is a challenge to get projects done in time to celebrate the Winter Solstice.

Everyone has their own op opinion of the season. With Santa Claus, Hanukkah, the birth of Jesus and the longest night of the year in Solstice, there are many options for people to celebrate. Getting together with loved ones and celebrating in your own way is the true reason to bring joy to our hearts. It's interesting to learn of different ways people celebrate around the world. A few websites I enjoy browsing to learn and educate myself about traditions and customs are magazine sponsored websites such as https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/holidays/christmas-ideas/g23601545/christmas-traditions-kids-family/ or https://www.tasteofhome.com/collection/ways-to-celebrate-christmas-this-year/ . Who would of thought the cycle of learning would come full circle and reading a magazine online about the Holidays would be something a librarian would enjoy!

  1. Kristina, We are entering a time of wonder. The darkness gives us pause and slows the pace for some. For us, working, school, family there is little opportunity to slow down. I appreciate your celebration of the season. Last year, on the solstice, we had a fire in a fire pit at the library and invited people to bring a reading to share or a song to sing or a story to tell. It was bitter cold, but the fire was nice and the group that came (25+) people had a wonderful time. We sang a song in the round that was moving and beautiful. The Hot Choco and popcorn inside after was a treat also. I let the police know it was happening so they did not get alarmed by a fire outside the library. It was a great program for those 25-35 year old. Some older folk joined in too.
