Using Virtual Reality in different library settings is becoming more and more common. Different libraries use VR in different ways.

Using Virtual Reality in school libraries -

VR can be used in many ways in school libraries. One of the most common and effective ways is to have an immersive classroom. An immersive classroom is a teaching room, in the library,  in which images are projected onto the internal walls of the room. Another way of bringing VR into the school library is having VR headsets for students to use. A benefit of both kinds of VR is the level of immersion they provide. Students are asked to look around and talk about what they see. This provides opportunities for students to collaborate and can improve interaction on what they are learning about.

Using Virtual Reality in public libraries -

Public libraries serve as an excellent venue to introduce new technologies to the general public. VR is one of the technologies that is increasingly starting to get adopted in public libraries. While the interest in VR is growing, it is still considered an expensive piece of technology which many patrons cannot afford privately. Libraries could potentially be a good venue to introduce VR to the public without the cost burden on patrons. Library programming using digital media, technology and VR has become more as digital communities grow. Libraries are also considered to be ideal places for connected learning to occur as they provide a space for patrons to learn based on their interest and often gives opportunities for staff and peer support.

Using Virtual Reality in academic libraries -

VR has become more common in many libraries, including academic libraries due the impact of the COVID pandemic on students. When learning was on Zoom, there was no student immersion or connection to programs or in-person classroom learning. In an academic library, VR can enhance educational takeaways and tie into curriculum for students. Ultimately, VR programs help to enhance classroom learning and make it more immersive.
