With the popularity of social media comes news stories of ways in which social media has benefited someone or harmed them. For our assignment this week for Social Media & Web Technology, we were given the task of finding an article or a video related to how someone was affected (either positively or negatively) by their use of social media.
I originally wanted to pick something that showed how social media brings the world together and makes seeing and enjoying friends and family easier and more personable than letter writing or emails. After searching and searching, it was so hard to find something positive to share. I stumbled across this video on YouTube and I thought it was worth sharing. Social media can be a positive and helpful tool, but it can also lead to depression and low self esteem. I have witnessed this first hand with my two teen aged daughters.
I think limited social media time is a benefit to your mental health and to your self esteem. Some time online interacting and catching up with family and friends is a good thing but too much can be harmful. In a library setting I see the benefits of social media when patrons connect with distant family members or find events happening in the community.
The video I found is titled "6 Months Without Social Media as a Gen Z"
You can find the video at: https://youtu.be/z1FVURd-JTM
The video is about the creator, Lucy Allen, and how she benefited from leaving her social media accounts behind. At first she was worried about not keeping on trend with fashion and celebrities but soon realized she was missing it after all.
I chose this video because it's a great example of leaving the stress and pressure of social media behind and not missing it. This is a wonderful example people should see and realize we do not need social media as much as we think we do.
