How do patrons print documents in the library? "Back in the day"..... most people owned at home printers they used with their desktop computers to print. As ink becomes more and more expensive and people need to print from their laptops, tablets and smartphones, desktop computers become more obsolete.  Insert the public library! Public libraries have become more and more convenient for patrons to use public computers to print or even better, printing wireless from their own personal device. That is how patrons can print from the library I work at. It's a little bit of a learning curve to show patrons how they can bring up a document to print on their device. They switch their WiFi to our library printer, and easily print what they need.  This week from my college classmates I learned about Princh. Princh is a simple cloud-based printing solution that allows users to print, copy, scan and pay from their mobile devices, laptops and desktop PC's. This is a great option f...

Using Virtual Reality in different library settings is becoming more and more common. Different libraries use VR in different ways.  Using Virtual Reality in school libraries - VR can be used in many ways in school libraries. One of the most common and effective ways is to have an immersive classroom. An immersive classroom is a teaching room, in the library,  in which images are projected onto the internal walls of the room. Another way of bringing VR into the school library is having VR headsets for students to use. A benefit of both kinds of VR is the level of immersion they provide. Students are asked to look around and talk about what they see. This provides opportunities for students to collaborate and can improve interaction on what they are learning about.  Using Virtual Reality in public libraries -   Public libraries serve as an excellent venue to introduce new technologies to the general public. VR is one of the technologies that is increasingly starting...

Does your library have a book club? A book club that any and all patrons can attend? A book club where they choose the reading list a year in advance? Angie W. Cox Public Library does! I'm a member and I think it's kind of weird.  Last night while sitting at a book club hearing the other ladies talk about our current months read, which by the way was "Alaskan Holiday" by Debbie Macomber, I thought to myself, this is weird...... A group of 6-7 ladies (no men) sitting around talking about a book they just willingly read. Very rarely I hear or see on social media a group of men, or a man attending a Book Club. Is this a "woman" thing to do? I enjoy listening to everyone's opinion of the book but when it comes to my turn, I feel awkward. I feel my point of view or thoughts are usually different from the others and when I verbalize them, I get weird looks. Now, this might just be me and my self esteem but even last night at Book Club I made a comment about n...

With the popularity of social media comes news stories of ways in which social media has benefited someone or harmed them. For our assignment this week for Social Media & Web Technology, we were given the task of finding an article or a video related to how someone was affected (either positively or negatively) by their use of social media.   I originally wanted to pick something that showed how social media brings the world together and makes seeing and enjoying friends and family easier and more personable than letter writing or emails. After searching and searching, it was so hard to find something positive to share. I stumbled across this video on YouTube and I thought it was worth sharing. Social media can be a positive and helpful tool, but it can also lead to depression and low self esteem. I have witnessed this first hand with my two teen aged daughters.  I think limited social media time is a benefit to your mental health and to your self estee...

We have been talking a lot about websites in our Social Media & Web Technology class. With the Holiday fast approaching I have been thinking a lot about what to give and make people on my list for gifts. I also think a lot about celebrating the Solstice and not so much the religiously commercial part of Christmas.  I always start cruising the crafty websites of www.pinterest.com or www.etsy.com to get ideas of things I can make for my closest family members or friends. This time of year there are TONS of ideas. Finding the time and motivation between work and school is a challenge to get projects done in time to celebrate the Winter Solstice.  Everyone has their own op opinion of the season. With Santa Claus, Hanukkah, the birth of Jesus and the longest night of the year in Solstice, there are many options for people to celebrate. Getting together with loved ones and celebrating in your own way is the true reason to bring joy to our hearts. It's interesting to learn of dif...

Designing or planning a website can be a daunting task! Staying focused and knowing what you would like the end result to be like can be a good way to complete the task without feeling overwhelmed. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when starting the planning process.   Be aware of the visual hierarchy. In other words, get straight to the most important point your viewer will see when they find your website page. Rank the most important elements you want to include on your website in order of importance and visually display them in this ranking order. By visually arranging and organizing your website elements, your visitors will naturally gravitate toward these important elements first.  Another good tip to keep in mind is following the conventional website layout. This will give your viewers the confidence to navigate your website. Wild and wacky website designs can be confusing and distracting for prospective viewers. Having an easy to use navigation bar is key to keep...
